FOOD SERVICE CHANGES

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Maconaquah School Corporation Food & Nutrition Department operates as a self-supporting, cost-effective business within our district and maintains fiscal responsibility for the overall operation.

Helpful Information:

The Food & Nutrition Department relies solely on money received from students and adults for meals and ala carte items as well as some government reimbursement for each school breakfast and lunch meal purchased.  Therefore, it is important that students are given breakfast and lunch money each day to purchase their meals.

We are in the process of implementing a new software program for the lunch program called Titan/Linq.  Online payments through Titan/Linq are a simple, safe, and secure way to make payments to your child’s account.  To sign up you will need the first and last name, as well as the birth date of the student as recorded in the school office.

You will receive email notifications when your child’s account balance is $10.00 or less.

If an email is not on file in the cafeteria then paper notifications will go home with your students weekly.  Balances may also be checked online at LINQ Connect.  (https://linqconnect.com/).

MSC Food & Nutrition Department receives money from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  This means that our school can process free and reduced-price meal benefit applications.

The Food & Nutrition Department does have the ability to Directly Certify students who receive SNAP, TANF, and some Medicaid, are certified as homeless, migrant, or are wards of the state (foster children).

Households who are found to be Directly Certified will be notified in writing of the free in writing of the free or reduced-price meal status prior to the start of the school year and will not need to complete an application.

Meal benefit applications will not be available until July 1st.  Households are encouraged to apply before the start of the school year to avoid unpaid meal charges.  Students who are not approved for free or reduced meals will be classified as paid status and meal charges may begin to accumulate starting the first day of school.  Meal charges accrued before the approval of a meal benefit application will be the responsibility of the household.

You DO NOT need to complete an application if:

  • You receive notification that your child(ren) are Directly Certified.
  • You know that your household does not qualify for meal benefits. (Please have money in your child’s account on the first day of school).

Applications received prior to July 1st will not be effective for the 2024-2025 school year.

Food & Nutrition Department

The Maconaquah School Corporation has an essential role in the lives of students by providing them with a foundation for healthy living and learning.  Our goal is to provide student favorites combined with non-processed, healthier, fresh selections.

The MSC Food & Nutrition Department makes affordable, healthy, and nutritious breakfasts and lunches daily for our students.  We continue to meet tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.  We would like you to encourage your child to try a variety of the different choices offered throughout the school year.

Farm to School Program

We are excited to work with our very own Mac Cattle Company to provide the freshest beef and pork to our students.  We feel this is not only a great benefit for our students in the lunchroom but also for the students who participate in the Maconaquah Agriculture program.

NUTRITION SERVICES

Welcome to Maconaquah School Corporation Food and Nutrition Services. The Federal Government passed new regulations in January 2012 regarding the contents of school lunches beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.

We are now required to serve larger portions of fruits and vegetables. We must offer 1/2 cup of dark green vegetables, 3/4 - 1 1/4 cups of red/orange vegetables, 1/2 cup of legumes (beans), 1/2 cup of starchy vegetables, 1/2 - 3/4 cup of other vegetables, and 1- 1 1/2 cups of additional vegetables from any category. The amount served depends on the grade level of the student. Students in ALL grades must take no less than 1/2 cup of fruit and/or vegetables.

You can go to http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ and look under the My Plate tab to see what qualifies under these categories. The students will be seeing new items this year, and we ask you to encourage your son/daughter to try them out.

In addition, requirements such as minimum and maximum calorie limits have been specified per grade as well as a maximum percentage of saturated and fats and sodium. No trans fats are allowed unless they are naturally occurring, such as those in meat products. Other changes include the milk that we serve. We are only allowed to offer 1% white milk or fat-free (skim) white or flavored milk.

If you have any questions about the new challenge to educate students on developing healthy eating habits, please feel free to contact me or any of the building level cafeteria managers. We will be happy to answer your questions.
