Pipe Creek Elementary
βοΈ We had a very successful roundup night at Pipe Creek this month. We got to meet so many new families and share some things that make Mac great! Thank you to all families who attended that evening! For more information about how to get started with us in Preschool or Kindergarten, please contact Laura Fulton at [email protected].us
βοΈ We find ourselves at the end of the third grading period already! Your child brought home his report card yesterday along with COGAT reports for Kindergarteners. Please review your child’s progress and ask any questions that you have. Praise your child for his hard work and thank your child’s teacher for helping them grow!
βοΈ Following Spring Break, all K and 1 students will take their End-of-Year IREADY diagnostics in Reading and Math. We look forward to sharing those reports with you very soon. The kids will be setting their individual growth goals again and working hard to earn another school-wide reward!
Maconaquah Elementary
βοΈ Hooray! The IREAD testing for second and third grade is complete, and we are proud of the hard work our students have done. Teachers and students are now preparing for ILEARN testing in April and will hit the ground running after a well-deserved spring break.
βοΈThere’s so much more than testing that goes on at Mac El…
Students were greeted in the morning by members of the USAF Security Police. They gave them high fives and wished them a good day! These members will come every month to say hello to our students. With the Grissom Air Force Reserve Base located nearby, it is a great opportunity to form a partnership with them. We are excited to offer our students the chance to be encouraged by our military personnel!
Our third-grade students recently went on a field trip to the Honeywell Center to watch a musical called "Rosie Revere, Engineer." The show focuses on students in a STEM classroom and encourages them to think creatively and take risks. The musical presented STEM curriculum and standards to the students in an enjoyable and practical manner.
Our fifth graders embarked on a STEM adventure at the Indianapolis Coliseum. They participated in engaging exercise science activities and capped off the day by cheering on the Women's Horizon League Championship basketball game.
Thank you to our Student Council and the families who attended the Family Movie Night. It was a success! Students and families enjoyed a night of fun, bonding over a movie and delicious snacks. Donations were the “ticket” to come and supported the wonderful organization Helping Hands with their food pantry.
Maconaquah Middle School
βοΈ The Middle School has been working hard to prepare students for the upcoming ILEARN assessment. Most of you will remember the ISTEP days and while this is similar it is also much different. For more information see the Indiana Department of Education website: https://www.in.gov/doe/
βοΈ We have also concluded all Winter Sports and will recap swimming, as well as introduce a few more of our clubs. We also have excellent results from our music department as they competed in the ISSMA Band and Choir Contest:
The swim season was one of improvement. The record 4 wins and 4 losses is not as impressive as the amount of improvement seen in the athletes throughout the season. We started the season with 17 out of 32 swimmers with zero experience and some who could not swim. The team improved a tremendous amount. A huge shout out to Macie McManus who broke the Middle School Diving Record.
The Chess club meets in Mr. Redmon's room, after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Members of all skill levels enjoy playing chess and different chess variations, as well as learning the basic strategies, tactics, and patterns of the game. At the end of the semester, the chess club hosts a chess tournament, which requires players to record their games using chess notation.
The Middle School FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) meets every Friday morning throughout the school year. Every Friday, FCA enjoys breakfast together, has a Bible lesson, and plays a group game. This is a student-led group with the students giving the lessons and organizing the games. The group usually runs around 30 students. FCA has partnered with four area churches that provide breakfast each week for the students. This is a great group of kids and many of the students are leaders in our school building. Friday mornings with FCA is a great way to end the school week!
The Maconaquah FFA (Future Farmers of America) is a growing group of students who are interested in various topics/ focuses in agriculture. Recently we sent two Discovery teams to the District LDE contest. Delany Farnham and Ruby Fruth placed second in the Animal Science Demonstration event. Isabel Fruth, Molly Heath, Levi Merritt, and Colt Myers placed third in the Quiz Bowl. Congratulations FFA members!
Maconaquah Middle School Choir students performed at the ISSMA Organizational Contest on Saturday, March 16, 2024. They sang “Sing Out a Joyful Song” (Perry), “Who Am I?” (Stone), and “Goliath” (Williams/Martin). All three judges scored them within 1.5 points from a perfect score, with perfect categories such as note accuracy, rhythm accuracy, musicianship, and phrasing. Excellent work, students! We are proud of you!
The 7th and 8th-grade bands received gold awards at the ISSMA Organizational Contest at Northwestern High School. The 7th grade band performed in Group IV. They performed three pieces: Gettysburg by John Edmondson, After The Rain by Matt Neufeld, and Barrage by Robert W. Smith. The 8th grade band performed in Group III. They performed Two English Dances by John O’Reilly, Gently Touch the Sky by Robert Sheldon, and Engines of Resistance by Larry Clark. We are proud of the students' hard work!

βοΈ News from French Class…
French III/IV students continue to correspond with students at the Collège-Lycée Saint-Julien in Brioude, France. Maconaquah High School students have hosted students from this school five times in the past, and Maconaquah students visited their school in 2015 and 2018. Here is a snapshot of some videos that French III/IV students recently made for students in France. They recorded themselves speaking in French and English.
The students and teachers in both countries appreciate the opportunity to exchange video messages, and form friendships across the miles. The exchange has a lasting impact on the students who embrace the opportunity!
Last month, Maconaquah students competed at Congrès, an annual academic and artistic competition for French students in Indiana. The competition took place at Franklin Community High School. The five students who competed did a wonderful job representing Maconaquah High School. Courtney Brown, grade 9, earned first place in Musical Instrumental Solo, second place in Musical Ensemble, and fourth place in French 1 Geography. Izabella Orpurt, grade 10, was awarded second place in French 1 Poetry Recitation, second place in Musical Ensemble, and third place in French 1 Sight Reading. Senior Luna Hu received first place in French 4 Dictation, second place in French 4 Extemporaneous Speaking, third place in French 4 History/Culture, and fourth place in French 4 Sight Reading. Senior Giulia DaCorte was awarded second place in French 4 History/Culture and fourth place in French 4 Dictation. Félicitations! (Congratulations!)
βοΈ National Honor Society Inductions
National Honor Society inductions took place this month in the cafeteria. You may ask what NHS is all about. The Maconaquah chapter of NHS requires a 9.0 GPA during Sophomore or Junior Year, no documented violations of academic dishonesty or serious discipline referrals at school, and evidence of membership in at least two different school activities and two community/church activities during high school. Students document their qualifications via a membership application and secure teacher recommendations to compliment their applications. Each student's application materials and teacher referrals are then assigned an anonymous number and reviewed/selected by a panel of high school staff. Once inducted, students are required to log 8 hours of community service each semester, participate in chapter service projects, and attend monthly meetings.
This year's NHS group consists of 31 juniors and 31 seniors for the 2023-2024 school year. Twenty-four new students were inducted into NHS on Thursday March 14, 2024. These students accumulated 539.5 hours of documented community service in the fall semester while also partnering with Sunshine Society to host a canned food drive that brought in 619 non-perishable food items for food pantries in Peru and Bunker Hill. These students also hosted a successful volleyball tournament last month to help fund prizes and supplies for the 2024-2025 school year.
Officers of NHS were asked how this group makes a difference. Senior Sydney Barnes mentioned that through NHS, students become more involved in their community by helping people do activities such as basketball camps and volunteering at local shelters. These activities teach students what it means to have responsibility, kindness, and leadership. Senior Lauren Merritt says, “NHS teaches students leadership, community, hard work, honesty, and kindness.
Being a member of NHS helps guide students along to become better people and be successful in their own life.” Senior Laci Winegardner expressed, “The National Honor Society gives students who excel in leadership, community service, and academic endeavors an opportunity to be recognized for these accomplishments. It is a great way to get involved in their school by serving others and offering encouragement, thus, leaving a positive impact. Being a part of NHS also opens doors for scholarships, college admissions, and future opportunities.” Congratulations to our group of NHS leaders, and best wishes for your future success.
M.S.C.P.D.
In 2020 the Maconaquah School Corporation Board of Trustees created the Maconaquah School Corporation Police Department (MSCPD). This was due to the lack of man power within the Miami County Sheriff Office and they could no longer provide a School Resource Officer (SRO) to the school corporation.
The three SRO’s with the MSCPD follow the Triad concept of the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO). The triad concept is Law Enforcement Officer, Mentor and Counselor at any one time throughout the day. They also help in providing a safe learning environment for all students and a safe working environment for staff members.
The MSCPD conducts investigations involving students, staff and parents. They work alongside and assist the Indiana State Police and Miami County Sheriff Office. They have a great working relationship with the Miami County Probation and Miami County Prosecutors Office. The MSCPD responded to 185 calls for service during the first semester and 42 calls for service during the month of January 2024.
MSCPD employees three officers. One full-time and two part-time. They patrol five buildings on two campuses. They also cover sporting events, extra-curricular activities, dances and graduation. All three officers are certified through NASRO and the Indiana School Resource Officers Association (INSROA). They also have extensive training in active shooter and hostage or barricaded subjects. They assist building administrators with truancy issues and make home visits to check the welfare of students. They also conduct investigations to any threats made to students, staff or the school.
Chief of Police Wayne Ives holds a National Practitioner SRO certification through NASRO and a Master SRO certification through INSROA. Officers Chet Sites and Adam Liehr both hold an SRO certification through NASRO.
The MSCPD can be reached by calling 765-689-9131. Chief Ives can be reached at extension 5060, Officer Sites at extension 5061 and Officer Liehr at extension 5062. If an emergency should arise after school hours please contact the Miami County Sheriff Office at 765-473-5474.
