Fund to support student activities for years to come
Last week, the Maconaquah School Corporation Board of Trustees voted unanimously in favor of a new endowment fund that will support student activities for years to come.
The Future Brave Endowment Fund will begin this school year, and funds will be invested with the Miami County Community Foundation (MCCF), a fund affiliate of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation.
“This will go to help our students in a variety of different ways,” said Maconaquah Superintendent Dr. James Callane. “It is an opportunity for our alumni and friends of Maconaquah to give to our future students.”
The resolution states five percent of ticket sales and concession sales at school events will go to the fund. Callane noted that this will provide a “steady flow of income” to the fund in addition to gifts from donors.
“Almost all colleges have an endowment of some type, and many of those colleges are smaller than our high school,” said board member Tim White, who has been instrumental in the creation of the fund.
White said naming rights will be another method for alumni or community members to donate to the fund. If someone wants naming rights to a specific classroom or school facility, they will be able to purchase those rights with a donation to the endowment fund. White said commitments for donations have already been received.
“We plan to purposely price these to be affordable to a wide range of donors,” White said. “We know that there are many people who have the desire to give to something like this and ensure future Maconaquah students have great opportunities that make up a well-rounded education.”
White said the MCCF is a “great steward of money” and will be a great partner for this initiative. He said funds will be invested long-term, and the principle will not be withdrawn.
“Eventually, the investment returns will provide the funds for our student activities,” White said. “We expect initial investment returns to be withdrawn within a few years.”
White said he is very excited for this initiative to make a “positive difference that will outlast our tenure as caretakers of this great school.”
